Zari embroidery work consists of embroidery with very fine metal tread. This thread is mostly gold colored. Hence the name 'zari', meaning 'golden'.
The patches are made of a base of cotton on which a combination of recycled saree borders is sewn. These borders are united with zari thread and embellished with zari embroidery.
Because of the abundant embroideries with the fine metal thread, the patches are quite rigid.
